I show a practical use for a Step Down Switching Regulator (aka buck converter, or DC-DC converter or SMPS) to convert 18v Drill Tool Batteries to 12v and an AC Inverter to generate 110v AC. I explain why a linear regulator (7812) would not cut it. I use as an emergency portable power supply and also as a portable power supply for testing out my projects. I've also included a Ryobi Flashlight hack.
Being that it's isolated, its better for testing out projects on the bench.
